Why LMNT's Ratio Isn't Arbitrary
Most electrolyte drinks are built backwards. They start as a sugary sports drink, then have a bit of salt tipped in as an afterthought. LMNT was built the other way around — the ratio came first, and it's not a random number on a label.
Why 1000mg of sodium
Sodium is the electrolyte the body actually loses the most of, especially for us here in Australia where a hard session in summer heat can mean serious sweat loss. Athletes and trainers have logged sodium losses of several grams during a tough session — sometimes more in hot, humid conditions like a Queensland summer or the Busselton Ironman.
It's not just about exercise, either. Most sodium in a typical diet comes from processed food. Cut back on that (as a lot of health-conscious people do) and sodium intake can drop off a cliff — right as the body still needs it to function properly. Low-carb and fasting lifestyles compound this further, since they naturally flush out more sodium through urine.
A gram of sodium per stick isn't there to make you thirsty for more product. It's there because that's roughly what active, whole-foods-eating, low-carb Australians are commonly short on.
Why the sodium-to-potassium ratio is 5:1, not 3:2
Here's where it gets interesting. Inside every cell, there's a sodium-potassium pump — a tiny mechanism that keeps muscles contracting and nerves firing properly. It runs on a roughly 3:2 sodium-to-potassium exchange.
So why isn't LMNT built to match that 3:2 ratio exactly? Two reasons: people who sweat heavily lose disproportionately more sodium than potassium, and most whole-foods diets already deliver a reasonable amount of potassium through meat, avocado, leafy greens and fruit — but not nearly enough sodium. The extra sodium in LMNT's ratio is there to close a gap that potassium usually doesn't have.

Magnesium plays a role in energy production, muscle recovery, and sleep quality — and it's estimated that a meaningful chunk of the population doesn't get enough of it. Like sodium and potassium, the idea isn't to replace diet — it's to top up what a normal day (or a hot one) tends to run short on.
What's deliberately left out
It's just as telling what's not in the formula. No calcium (most people already get enough through food, and there's some evidence too much supplemental calcium isn't ideal for heart health). No phosphorus (genuine deficiency is rare). No trace minerals or iodine bundled in for the sake of a longer ingredients list — because loading up on things the body doesn't need doesn't make a product "more complete," it just makes the label busier.
Why this matters if you're deciding what electrolyte to reach for
A lower price point on a competing product is nearly always a sign that something in the formula has been diluted — either lower sodium, a cheaper sweetener, or a "just as good" claim that doesn't hold up when you actually check the numbers per serve. Sodium especially is the electrolyte people most often assume they need less of, when for anyone active, sweating in Australian heat, or eating a lower-carb diet, the opposite is usually true.
